Abstract
The count-mass distinction in Chinese is analyzed in different ways. Some researchers hold that
the count-mass distinction in Chinese is lexically encoded in that count nouns like lizi ‘pear’ denote
entities that constitute a discrete unit by itself while the denotation of mass nouns like shui ‘water’ has
no natural boundary (Cheng Sybesma, 1998, 1999). These researchers give a semantic account for
the count-mass distinction. Other researchers argue that a noun is underspecified in countability cross-
linguistically and the count-mass distinction in Chinese is anchored in the syntactic functional
