Unit 3 Living Legends
Teaching aims:
Help the students get a better understanding of Lang Ping and Michael Jordan.
Enable the students to make predictions based on the pictures, titles and layout of the text.
Let the students be able to describe famous athletes by using proper words, phrases and sentences.
Guide the students to learn good qualities from the famous athletes, such as the mental strength, the spirit of never giving up and learning from failures.
Teaching process:
Step 1 Lead-in
Show a poster about the movie called Leap and Let the students watch a clip about the China women’s volleyball team to arouse their interest in the topic.
Ask the students to tell something they know about Lang Ping and Michael Jordan and what they want to know about them.

Step 2 Making predictions
Ask the students to make predictions before reading. I will teach the students how to predict.

Suggested answer: I think it is about stories of the two famous athletes-Lang Ping and Michael Jordan.
Step 2 Scanning
Students will be asked to read the text quickly and answer the question.

Step 3 Reading and Thinking
Part1 Ask students to read the paragraph introducing Lang Ping and discuss the questions in pairs.
How was Lang Ping’s determination tested in the 2015 World Cup?
Suggested answer: The team was falling apart/ lost two important players.
Why does the writer give the example the 2015 World Cup?
Suggested answer: To show/prove(证明) that Lang Ping is a person with strong determination and would not lose heart when she faced challenges.
Part2 Ask students to read the paragraph introducing Michael Jordan and discuss the questions in pairs.
