Introduce the writing strategy- to show not to tell List more examples for students to learn Step three New lesson (Purpose: To develop students’ abilities of using showing skills by showing and practicing) Showing skill one: active verbs Showing skill two: feelings and thoughts Showing skill three: similes and metaphors Showing skill four: five senses Step four Summary (purpose: have the students to find out the usage of showing skills and can recognize the skills in passages ) What showing skills are used in the passage? Rebecca was waiting for her job interview to begin.The clock ticks away, and time, like a stream, flows on.Her heart was racing (feelings) as she tapped her foot(active verbs). she wondered if the manager would like her (thoughts). Her heart leapt out of her chest ( metaphors)when she saw it was her turn. Step five Writing (purpose: guide the students to pay attention to the usage of showing skills to improve their continuation writing ability) Use at least 3 showing skills and what you have learned to continue the piece of writing below.
