From this passage, I hold the opinion that the title may have the following symbolic meanings. First, from the view of the man, Vera is the dill pickle. Dill pickle can serve as a etizer. The man did not want to spend the whole life with Vera. In other word, Vera is not his dinner which is formal. For instance, he didnt recognize Vera at the first sight. What is more, he didnt ask more about the womans financial situation when Vera mentioned the sale of her favorite piano. We can infer that the man has no interest in helping Vera dealing with financial problems though now he has the capability. We feel pity for Vera. Second, the relationship between Vera and her ex is as sour as the taste of dill pickle. The man needs a generous listener, but Vera needs someone really cares about her feelings, a man who can understand her pride and dignity. The man became richer and now he smoked elaborate cigarette ,travelled to Russia. But Vera got poorer and even gave u her music dream. Vera had lots of words to say, but it came out to be that she almost just said a few words from the beginning to the end. Maybe it is because of the atmosphere at that time which restrained womens voice 1 / 2 and their freedom. Third, I consider the dill pickle as a mourn of the lost of youth. In paragraph 48, Vera couldnt help speaking out the name of a dog. It showed that she really missed that time. Ho time flies.
