He was born in 1900 in a poor area of New Orleans. When Louis was still a child, his parents separated and Louis lived with his mother. Life was very hard for little Louis, but Louis smiled through everything. He sold newspapers in the streets and worked in a coalyard. Sometimes there was not much food in the house. But there was music everywhere, and it was free. There were parades, dances and singing in the streets. Little Louis absorbed it all. Then he got into trouble. In 1912 he was arrested for carrying a gun and was put into prison. While there, as a reward for good behavior, he was taught to play the cornet. This was the turning point in his life. After his release from the prison, Louis got a job playing in a jazz band.
