REV. A 1 OF 2 Cleaning the 2489 Flow Cell When to Perform • Flush the flow cell after each shutdown, or when dirty. A dirty flow cell can cause baseline noise, decreased sample energy levels, calibration failure, and other problems with the operation of the 2489 Detector. NOTE: If flushing does not resolve the problem, remove and clean the flow cell windows and lens as shown in the “Rebuilding the 2489 Flow Cell” procedure. Replace the flow cell components as required. Parts Required • None Tools Required • A wrench suitable for removing and replacing the column • A solvent miscible in both the mobile phase and water (methanol is commonly used) • HPLC-grade water • A strong cleaning solvent suitable for your system (isopropanol, for example) • A separate container for acid waste • A means for measuring the pH of acid effluent (if you use an acid as your cleaning solvent) NOTE: There is no “Cleaning the 2489 Flow Cell” video. Flush the Flow Cell 1. Stop mobile phase flow, then remove the column. 2. Replace the column with a union or section of tubing. CAUTION: IF THE MOBILE PHASE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WATER, FLUSH IT WITH AN INTERMEDIATE SOLVENT BEFORE CONTINUING. 3. Flush the detector with HPLC-grade water to remove flow path contaminates. 4. Pump 100% methanol through the flow cell to clean it internally. Do not exceed 3447 kPa (34 bar, psi). 5. Optionally pump a strong cleaning solvent, such as isopropanol, through the flow cell. Do not exceed 3447 kPa (34 bar, psi). 6. Reattach the column. 7. Resume pumping with mobile phase. CAUTION: IF THE MOBILE PHASE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WATER, FLUSH IT FIRST WITH AN INTER
