1.High-contextculturesMostoftheinformationisinthephysicalcontextorisinternalizedinthepeople.Verylittleinformationisactuallycodedintheverbalmessage.Peopleareveryhomogeneous.High-contextcultureschangeverylittleovertime.Consistentmessageshaveproducedconsistentresponsestotheenvironment.

2.Low-contextculturesSomecommoncharacteristicsoflow-contextculturesinclude:Informationiscommunicatedprimarilythroughlanguage.Rulesareexplicitlyspelledoutandmeaningisexpressedverbally.Verbalmessagescontainmoreinformationandverylittleisshowninthecontextorwithintheparticipants.

2.Low-contextculturesAsHallsays,“high-contextpeopleareapttobecomeimpatientandirritatedwhenlow-contextpeopleinsistongivingtheminformationtheydon’tneed.”Chinesecommunicatebynotstatingthingsdirectly,whileAmericansusuallydotheopposite—“spellitout.”Theformerislookingformeaningandunderstandinginwhatisnotsaid—inthenonverbalcommunicationorbodylanguage,inthesilencesorpauses,andintherelationships.Thelatterplacesemphasisonsendingandreceivingaccuratemessagesdirectly,usuallybybeingarticulatewithwords.
