Thisdissertation,startingfromtheperspectiveofImagologyandincorporating
theoriesofParatextualityandIntertextuality,employsamethodoftextual
comparativeanalysis.ItbeginsbyexaminingtheimageconstructionoftheTaiping
HeavenlyKingdomwithintranslationsatthreelevels:vocabulary,hierarchical
relationships,andnarrativeplot.Itthenanalysesthereasonsbehindthese
constructionsbyconsideringthetranslationmotivationsoftranslatorsfromdifferent
historicalperiods,aswellastheirattitudestowardsandemotionsabouttheTaiping
HeavenlyKingdom,alongsideotherexternalfactors.Subsequently,thethesis
investigatesthetranslationstrategiesadoptedbyseveraltranslators,highlightingtheir
similaritiesanddifferences.Itconcludesbysummarizingtheeffectsandsignificance
oftheirimageconstruction.
Thisstudyrevealsthatthethreetranslationendeavors,rootedindistinct
historicalperiodsandinfluencedbythetranslators’diversepoliticalstancesand
motivations,resultedintheconstructionofthreedifferentimagesoftheTaiping
HeavenlyKingdom.MedhurstandEdkins,asmissionarysinologists,displayeda
“natural”affinitytowardstheChristiandoctrinalelementsprevalentinTaiping
documents.Thisinclinationwasfurtheramplifiedbythespecifichistoricalbackdrop,
whichintensifiedtheir“illusions,”leadingthemtoadopta“Domestication”
translationstrategy.Bydownplayingthe“pagan”elementsandhighlightingthe
conceptof“goodgovernance,”theycraftedimagesoftheTaipingsasmore
enlightenedthantheQinggovernmentandpossessingrudimentaryChristian
