SHIFTCONTROLSYSTEM

1.General

Acompactselectorlever(transmissionshiftassembly),whichhasbeendesignedunderanewconcept,

hasbeenadoptedintheinstrumentpanel.Itisamomentaryshifttypethatreturnstothehomeposition

whenthedriver’shandisreleasedfromtheshiftknobafterashiftingoperation.Itcanbeshiftedwitha

fingertip,andtheergonomicallydesignedshiftingpatternoffercellenteaseofoperation.

Ashift-by-wiretechnologyhasbeenadopted.Ashiftpositionsensorprovidedinthetransmissionshift

assemblydetectstheshiftposition(“R”,“N”,“D”,or“B”)andsendsacorrespondingsignaltotheHV

ECU.TheHVECUcontrolsthespeedoftheengine,MG1,andMG2,inordertoproduceanoptimalgear

ratio.

Theparkinglockmechanismofthe’03Priusisoperatedthroughalinkage.Incontrast,the’04Priushas

adoptedanelectricalcontrolinthesamewayastheshiftcontrol.

Withthismechanism,whenthedriverpressestheParkingswitchlocatedonthetopofthetransmission

shiftassembly,the“P”positioncontrolactuatestheshiftcontrolactuatorlocatedinthehybridtransaxle

inordertomechanicallylockthecounterdrivengear,whichengagestheparkinglock.
