TheCommunistPartyofChinacelebrateitscentennialthisyear.Itspent100yearstransformingChinafromacountrythatwasrampantwithwarlords,imperialistpowers,andcorruptionintotheworld’ssecond-largesteconomy.HowdidtheCPCturnthetables?Toanswerthisquestion,weneedtoknowafewfactsabouttheCPC.

HundredsofgroupshadtriedtosaveChina,butonlytheCPCmadeit.In1911duringtheQingDynasty,China’slastfeudaldynastywasoverthrown,buttherevolutionforcefailedtoestablishastronggovernment.Bytheendof1913,312politicalparty-likeemerginggroupshadbeenformed.TheyexperiencedwithdifferentWesternpoliticalsystemsandphilosophies,buttheyallfailedbecausethosesystemswerenotcompatiblewithChina’snationalconditions.However,theCommunistPartyofChinarosetotheoccasion.WhenthePartywasfoundedin1921,ithadmerely50-plusmembers.Inthenextcentury,itsmembershipincreasedtoover95millionmembers,makingitthelargestpoliticalpartyintheworld.

TheCPCendedacenturyofhumiliation.In1840,thecorruptQinggovernmentlosttheOpimuWarwagedbyBritain,leadingtomassiveimportsofopiumintoChina.Inthenext100years,almostalltheimperialistcountriesinvadedChina.ThePartyfoughtfor28yearsstrivingto“restorethesoul”ofthecountrywithindependenceandunityandtogivethepeoplebacktheirdignity.

TheCPCtackledtheunequaldistributionoflandownership.Backin1930,inruralareasofJiangxiProvince,thelandownerswhomadeup3.4%oftheruralpopulationownedmorelandthanalltherestofthefarmerscombined.Accordingtostatistics,nearly90%ofChinesepeople4in1949wereconsideredruralpopulations.Therefore,theCPClaunchedalandreformcampaignthatchampioned“landtothetiller”.Bytheendof1952,46.5%ofthecountry’sarablelandhadbeenturnedoverto300millionChinesepeasantsthroughthereform.
