OppositiontotelescopesonMaunaKeaisnothingnew.Asmallbutvocal

groupofHawaiiansandenvironmentalistshavelongviewedtheirpresenceas

disrespectfarsacredlandandapainfulreminderoftheoccupationofwhat

wasonceasovereignnation.

Someblameforthecurrentcontroversybelongstoastronomers.Intheir

eagernesstobuildbiggertelescopes,theyforgotthatscienceisnotthe

onlywayofunderstandingtheworld.Theydidnotalwaysprioritizethe

protectionofMaunaKeasfragileecosystemsoritsholinesstothe

islandsinhabitants.Hawaiiancultureisnotarelicofthepast;itisa

livingcultureundergoingarenaissancetoday.

Yetsciencehasaculturalhistory,too,withrootsgoingbacktothe

dawnofcivilization.Thesamecuriositytofindwhatliesbeyondthe

horizonthatfirstbroughtearlyPolynesianstoHawaiisshoresinspires

astronomerstodaytoexploretheheavens.Callstodisassembleall

telescopesonMaunaKeaortobanfuturedevelopmentthereignorethe
