TheideaforthisunicornwasinspiredbyTildaShalof，anurseinCanadawhospentnearly30yearscollectingabandonedmedicalplastictocreateacolourfulcreature．KCHnursesapproachedtheChildLifestaffaboutcreatingsomethinganalogousfortheirhospital．Thestaffagreed，andcollectionofplasticbegan．

Soonthecollectionnumberedinthethousands，butthequestionremained—whatwouldthisbecome?Aftermanymeetingsanddiscussions，KCHstaffsettledontheideaofaunicorn．Afterall，unicornsbecomethesourcewherealldreamythoughtscanblossom．Meetingaunicornandmakingfriendswithitcouldbesoappealingtochildren．Morethanstoriesaboutthehealingpower，forchildren，aunicornmightevenhavethemagicpowertochangeanything．

LexingtonartistChristineKuhnjoinedtheteamtoprovideguidanceonthedesignandconstructionprocess，buttheworkwasdoneentirelybyKCHstaffwhovolunteeredtheirtime．“Astheunicornstartedtotakeshape，itbecameevenclearerthatmanyhandswerepresentintheartwork，”saidJoeyBurke，anurseethicist．“Severalmusictherapistsaskediftheycouldaddaguitarpickandamemberofthemaintenancecrewaddedawirenut．Intheend，medicalwastebecamefantasticastheunicorntookshape．”
