TheworkinvolvedinrealizingLauren’splanwasnowalkinthepark.Initially,whileproudofherdaughter’svision,hermother,KatieSchroeder,admittedtosomeforebodingabouttheworkinvolved:“Iwaswondering,‘Ohmygosh,howmuchworkisthisgoingtobe?’Iwasn’tsurewhetherthiswouldwork.”Thiswasoneyoungchange-maker,however!Laurenresearchedplantsonline,checkingwhichspeciesneededmoreshade,howmuchwaterwasrequired,andwhentoharvesteachcrop.DuringIowa’shotsummers,shehadtowaterhercropsbyhandforaround2—3hoursdaily.Shealsocheckeddailyforweeds,andbentdowntopickhergreenbeancrop.Thankstoherdiligence,Laurenplantedhalfanacreofland,with15varietiesofvegetablesin2022,harvestingherfirstcrops.

Inaninterviewwithalocalmediachannel,Laurensays,“Iwantedtohavesomethingthat’dimpactpeople.Iwanttoimpactcommunitymembers.Manypeoplehelpyouout,butitmakesmoredifferencewhenyouhelpothersout.That’swhatmakesmehappiest.”
