originaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.A

superscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

INTRODUCTION

Thermocouplesarewidelyusedinindustryandtheyprovidereliableservice.However,if

thermocouplesfailinservice,theresultscanrangefromnegligibletolifethreatening.Oftenalossof

equipment,product,oroperatingtimewillresult.Theusershouldweighthepotentialconsequences

ofthermocouplefailurewhenconsideringwhattestsshouldbeperformed.Notestsarerequiredby

thisdocumentexceptthosespeci?callyorderedbytheuser.Thisdocumentlistsmethodsfortesting

sheathedthermocouplesandthermocouplematerialbutdoesnotstatecriteriaforacceptance.The

acceptancecriteriafortheparticularthermocouple,whensubjectedtothetests,aregiveninother

ASTMstandardspeci?cationsforthatthermocouple.ExamplesfromASTMthermocouplespeci?-

cationsforacceptancecriteriaaregivenformanyofthetests.Thesetabulatedvaluesarenot

necessarilythosethatwouldberequiredtomeetthesetests,butaregivenhereasexamplesonly.
