Thermocouplesarewidelyusedinindustryandprovidereliableservicewhenusedwithintheir

speci?edtemperaturerange.However,ifthermocouplesfailinservicetheconsequencescanrange

fromnegligibletolife-threatening.Often,anexpensivelossofequipment,product,oroperatingtime

willresult.Theusershouldweighthepotentialconsequencesofthermocouplefailurewhen

consideringwhattestsshouldbeperformedeitherpriorto,during,orafterinstallation.

Thisstandardisaguideforthe?eldtestingofthermocouplestoensurethattheywerenotdamaged

duringstorage,installation,oruseratherthanbeingaguideforacceptancetestingofthermocouples

asdeliveredfromthevendor.Thetestmethodsrangefromthemostbasicteststoassurethe

thermocouplewasproperlyinstalledtosimpletestsnecessaryforfailureanalysis.Thermocoupletests

suchashomogeneity,capacitance,andloop-currentstep-responserequireelaborateequipmentand

sophisticatedanalysisandarenotincludedinthisguide.
