ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF1921;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.
Scope
Thesetestmethodscoverlaboratorymeasurementofthestrengthofheatsealsformedbetweenthermoplasticsurfacesofflexiblewebs,immediatelyafterasealhasbeenmadeandbeforeitcoolstoambienttemperature.
Thesetestmethodsarerestrictedtoinstrumentedhottacktesting,requiringatestingmachinethatautomaticallyheatsealsaspecimenandimmediatelydeterminesstrengthofthehotsealatapreciselymeasuredtimeafterconclusionofthesealingcycle.Anadditionalprerequisiteisthattheoperatorshallhavenoinfluenceonthetestafterthesealingsequencehasbegun.Thesetestmethodsdonotcovernon-instrumentedmanualproceduresemployingsprings,levers,pulleysandweights,wheretestresultscanbeinfluencedbyoperatortechnique.
Twovariationsoftheinstrumentedhottacktestaredescribedinthesetestmethods,differingprimarilyintworespects:(a)rateofgripseparationduringtestingofthesealedspecimen,and(b)whetherthetestingmachinegeneratesthecoolingcurveofthematerialundertest,orinsteadmakesameasurementofthemaximumforceobservedfollowingasetdelaytime.Bothtestmethodsmaybeusedtotestallmaterialswithinthescopeofthesetestmethodsandwithintherangeandcapacityofthemachineemployed.Theyaredes
