EyeProtectiveDevicesforPaintballSports1
ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF1776;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.
INTRODUCTION
Thisisthespecificationforeyeprotectivedevices,orEPD,tobeusedinthesportofpaintball.Paintballisasportthat,likeallsports,hasintrinsichazards.Thesehazardsincludebeinghitbypaintballs.Protectiveequipmentcannoteliminateallinjuriesbutwillsubstantiallyreducetheirseverityandfrequency.Participationinthissportbyaplayerimpliesacceptanceofinjuryrisk.Thegoalofprotectiveequipmentistominimizetheriskofinjury.
Performancerequirementsarepresentedandareintendedtominimizeinjurywithminimalimpairmentoftheformandappealofthesport.Thisspecificationissubjecttorevisionasindicatedbysubsequentinjurystatistics.
Theimpactrequirementsaredesignedtogiveeyeandadnexalprotectionfrompaintballimpactslikelytobeencounteredundergameconditions.WhiletheEPDalsomayprotecttheuserfromotherpotentialimpacts,suchasrunningintotreebranches,therearemanyconceivableimpacts,includingfallsfromheights,whichcouldexceedthespecificationandresultineyeinjurydespitetheuseoftheEPD.
Scope
Thisspecificationappliestoeyeprotectivedevices,designedforusebyplayersofthesportofpaintball,thatminimizeorsignificantlyreduceinjurytotheeyeandadnexaduetoimpactandpenetrationofpaintballs.
Eyeprotectivedevicesmeetingtherequirementsofthisspecificationofferprotectiontotheeyesandadnexaandnotnecessarilytoanyotherpartsofthehead.
