From the rhetoric perspective, it generally refers to the words indicating something else rather than its literal meaning. In literature, most forms of irony involve the perception or awareness of a discrepancy between words and their meaning, between actions and their results, or between what something appears to be and what actually is. It is often used by the author for the purpose of mockery or jest. However, as irony is more and more widely used and further research has been made on broader phenomenon of irony, it implies richer and even more profound meaning. Wayne Booth, an American literary theorist, points out in The Rhetoric of Fiction that: Irony is not only a rhetoric method usually used to render language expression more vivid, but it refers to the method that a work exchanges with the readers, and the usual effect is often to cause readers to have interest in characters and events in the fictionalized world, and it is often to influence readers from moral level.1 B. Introduction of the Use of Irony in Jane Austen’s Works Jane Austen’s works have actually won her very high honor. She insists on establishing her writing on the understanding of life. She herself belongs to the middle-class and perhaps it is an important reason why her stories happen in the peaceful countryside of England and are about middle-class people’s courting and marriage. Her unique ability is suitable for the theme that she selects and her works are mainly of comedy. Her sense of comedy in human natural disposition shows her sharp eyes and sensibility, and her skill of genius is also shown in this period in three aspects: describing characters’characteristics, dealing with the viewpoint as well as utilizing ironic tune.
