A Brief Introduction to Austen’s ExperienceJane Austen was the seventh child of George Austen, who was the rector of the local parish，and was born in Steventon, in 1775. She enlivened her father’s parsonage and wrote about the clergy, the old maids, the short-sighted mothers, and the marriageable daughters.Jane Austen’s life gave little opportunity for the biographer, unless he had something of her own power to show the beauty and charm of commonplace things. She began to write in her teens and completed the original manuscript of Pride and Prejudice, titled First Impressions, between 1796 and 1797. A publisher rejected the manuscript, and it was not until 1809 that Austen began the revisions that would bring it to its final form. Pride and Prejudice was published in January 1813, two years after Sense and Sensibility, her first novel, and it achieved a popularity that had endured to this day. Austen published four more novels: Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. The last two were published in 1818, a year after her death.Though she frequently satirized something or somebody in her word, she kept rational attitudes toward the subject. Hence, Austen was in many ways a realistic and rational person, and the England she depicts was one in which social mobility was limited and class-consciousness was strong.
