Introduction Nowadays, the world is moving towards modernization and globalization and changes have taken place in many aspects, we can take a plane to any place within hours and immediately know what is happening through visiting the Internet. As the world is?“shrinking?”, the influence of cultural diversity on human communication has become greater than ever before. The increasing contact of people from different cultural backgrounds inevitably calls for attention to appropriate communicative behaviors. However, contacts with different cultures that previously appeared unfamiliar, alien and even mysterious. Successful intercultural communication needs knowledge of related cultures. Even if we can overcome the blocks of language differences, we still might fail to understand each other between two different countries. Because thought pattern diversity. For example, an American people praises a Chinese hostess?“so clean and pretty house?”?.The hostess may responses?“ no, no, my house is untidy?”. This answer can be confuses the American people. What has caused the American man to be puzzled? American and Chinese have different thought patterns, so they may have different views and understanding towards a question. There is a famous proverb in west countries,?“ A closed mind is like a closed book, just a block of wood?”. Therefore, it is essential for us to cultivate sufficient intercultural awareness and openly thinking with the aim of achieving communication competence on different occasions.? This paper is a systematic study of the different thought patterns of Chinese and American as well as their impacts on intercultural communication. The way we interpret the incoming messages and information from another culture is affected by the predominant thought patterns formed in our culture. The
