He was considered as the father of modern American literature and Pioneer of American Humor. At the peak of his?? career, Twain contributed a masterpiece The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to American literature and international literature as well. It would be no exaggeration to say that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not only the golden treasury of American literature but also the golden treasury of American culture. Nowadays, the novel still delights us with its unforgettable characters and with its honest, unvarnished picture of rural American life before the Civil War. This great novel still makes its readers feel at home with Huck and Jim. Moreover, it still kindles off the flames of all the readers to experience the beautiful landscape of the great Mississippi River. The Mississippi is sandwiched between two banks, upon which lie the towns and villages that represent the earthly world that Huck and Jim are trying to escape. For Huck and Jim, the Mississippi River is the ultimate symbol of freedom. T.S.Eliot mentioned the two elements that made The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a great book:?“the boy and the river.”1 It is the Huck who gives the book style. The River gives the book its form. Today, people who pay any attention to books get used to hearing The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn this great American novel, a masterpiece, and even a world classic, but the real fact is that this novel caused an enormous amount of controversy. When The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was finished at last in February 1885, Mark Twain became somewhat aware of what he had accomplished with this book that had been begun as a?“journey work and depreciated, postponed, threatened with destruction.”1 However, as soon as this novel was first published, it met with so many serious attacks.
