Introduction In the late 20th century, there appears a new teaching approach called the Task-based Teaching Approach.?“Approach” means a kind of teaching principle or teaching concept, not a special teaching method. Skehan defines the approach as: attention is paid to fulfillment of the tasks and then assessment is based on whether the tasks have been finished or not.1 The Task-based Teaching Approach is currently being adopted and used in many countries. And it is considered as an advanced and effective teaching approach by a lot of academic papers and experimental results, for it can provide practical space for students and promote students’ motivation and creativeness. It contains various teaching methods, suitable for all kinds of activities and different forms of organization, encouraging experience, experimentation, participation, exchange and cooperation of students to realize the goal of each task and experience success. However, many teachers of English in senior middle school are still giving their lessons in the rather traditional ways. They are still dominating the whole class by teaching the students language knowledge and also evaluating the students’ achievements in a rather single way. So it is quite necessary to understand the new demands and new tendency of English teaching in the modern world. The purpose of this paper is to have a probe into the theory of the Task-based Teaching Approach and to expound the application of the Task-based Teaching Approach in English class in senior middle school. The author hopes this can help English teachers to understand Task-based Teaching Approach better so that they are able to design and implement language tasks of their own and make the teaching more successful and more effective.
