The main schools of the most common English teaching approaches are: the Grammar-translation Approach,the Direct Approach, the Audio-lingual Approach, the Cognitive Approach and the Communicative Approach. At first,I will introduce them briefly. Then, by revealing the present situation of English Teaching, it analyzes the current problems from the students’ side, the teachers’ side and the situation of teaching material and facility. At last, there has an all-around analysis on how to improve the English teaching methods of raising the students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. For example, the Audio-lingual Approach is suitable for teaching listening; the Communicative Approach is efficient in English speaking and so on. As for the current situation in middle school, English teaching should adopt the best teaching methods to train the appropriate skills, so we can solve the objective and subjective problems. English Teaching in middle school should not be set in stone, but should take a flexible approach in order to achieve the most effective teaching.II. The Main Schools of English Teaching ApproachesA. The Grammar?–translation Approach?The Grammar- translation Approach is used to teach Latin and Greek originally and is aimed at training students to appreciate and analyze the ability of foreign literature. Usually teachers carry on the teaching by the mother tongue of students. Under this kind of teaching, teachers and students all consider that only study the grammar rule, coupled with the recitation and translation of the words, then to be able to learn the foreign language.?“To learn is not an easy matter and to apply what one has learned is even harder.”1 It was not until the 1920s, with the increasing demand for foreign language day by day, the emergence of innovative teaching methods appear
