An exact rogue wave solution on Gaussian background beam is presented, in contrast to the previous studies about rogue waves on plane wave background. It is shown that the characteristics of rogue waves are maintained on Gaussian background beam, even that the beam’s width is a bit smaller than the rogue waves scale. These results may raise the possibility of related experiments and potential applications in nonlinear optics.
