Overview:
Brazil has a highly regulated and costly labour system for the formal sector, and there continues to be a sizeable informal sector that employs many workers. The country’s labour force is large; the Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts it t reach 103.6m by end-2010, up from 101.6m at end-2009. Real household incomes have increased and unemployment rates have steadily trended downwards since 2000, on the back of sustained economic growth. However, the unemployment rate rose in the first half of 2009, during the country’s shor economic recession, but has since fallen back closer to the levels prior to the deepening of the global financial crisis in late 2008.
According to Brazi’s national statistics agency, the Brazilian Institute fo Geography and Statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica-IBGE ) the unemployment rate during the first half of 2010 was 7.3%, down from 8.6% in the first half of 2009, but still higher than the 6.8% recorded at year-end 2008.The IBGE’s methodology considers those not holding full-time work but occupied for some portion of the day as being employed.
Qualified managers are widely available in Brazil, though vigorous competition to hire executives spurs rapid turnover. Management salaries have risen faster than inflation for years, but they remain moderate compared with those of industrialised countries.
Employment agencies and online services are widely used to fill technical, management and temporary positions. Some of the worlds top employmen companies have branches in Brazil. Labourers are usually recruited through notices at plant sites and by word of mouth.
