School of Civ il and H y draulic Engin eer- in g, H ef ei U n iv ersit y of T ech nology , H efei 230009, China) Abstract: By applying the sem-i rigid element which can represent t he mortise- tenon joint in t imber st ru cture, a three- dimensional finite element computation model is developed in t his paper t o calculate t he inner force, stress and displacement of H uizhou vernacular dw ellings w ith t imber struct ure. T he results show th at the struct ure is safe and has a high degree of safety . T he safet y of ridge columns is of the greatest import ance in avoiding the destruct ion of t he w hole t imber frame and the vernacular dw elling. T he dest ru ction of vernacular dw ellings generally result s from st ru ctural deterioration inst ead of member damage. Some possible damag e places can also be predict ed by t he model.
