Prmi ary joints and structural joints are w idespread in northern haanx.i Prmi ary joints are w idely distributed inM alan loess and are characterized by large density and long stretching. tructural joints, w ith d istinct directivity and spatial d ifference from region to region, are distributed in Lishi loess. tab ility of a h ighw ay slope variesw ith the orientations of loess joints. W hen the joints have their orientations smi ilar to that of the slope, they can have themaxmi um effect to reduce slope stab ility. The vertical joints have less efect. W hen joints are perpen dicular or intersect the slope, their effects are m inor. . everal sets of joints can form some regular d iscontinu ity patterns on slope surfaces. In the three dmi ensional space, they can form the tabu lar, sphenoid, and columnar structure patterns. The structural bod ies w ith d ifferent forms have different effects on the stability of slopes. The authors also discuss them ethod of calculating the stab ility of slopesw ith oblique joints.
