Abstr act: This paper first presents in rather detail the project of a s rvey on the problems existing in English writing. The data are collected from
537 Chinese st dents of three colleges. The s rvey was cond cted following Hasan. s theory of Generic Str ct re Potential. The res lt confirms o r hy2
pothesis that Chinese college st dents do not have strong genre awareness apart from having problems in lexis,grammar and other aspects. This strength2
ens o r belief that st dents n eed to start writing at the disco rse level and to be exposed to more practical genres, and that both teachers and st dents
