The characters referred to are mainly those w ritten in the pre-Qing styles of Chinese calligraphy ( e. g. seal characters) , including various pictographic styles. As an intermediate step in the process of the research and interpretation of ancient Chinese characters, such d special w ritingd shows different levels. Due to its complexity, the said dwritingd may produce several outcomes. One outcome is the different interpretation of the same character. This is most probably becausedwriting in the official scriptd replaces thedinterpretation of meaningd and is itself both less careful and less accurate.
