O n T ranslators Subjectiv ity in C h inese T ran slation of S ister C a rr ie — from the P erspective of R elevance T heory L iu Y ongm ei A T h esis S u b m itted in P artia l F u lfillm en t of the R equ irem ents for the D egree of M a ste r o f A rts In M odern E ng lish T ianjin N orm al U niversity M ay 20 12 A b str a c t From the perspective of relevance theory, this thesis attem pts to com pare tw o C h inese v ersions of S ister C arrie, translated by Q iu Zhuch ang S h i L ing in 1962 and W ang K efei Z hang Shaon ing in 1999 respectively, and exp lores translators subjectiv ity m an ifested in them , so as to show that translators subjectiv ity p lays an im portant role in the w ho le process of tran slation including choosing, understanding and expressing the text w h ile affected by som e factors, especially the original text, the translator and the target readers cogn itive env ironm ent. In the trad itional translation theories, translators ro le has been neglected . H ow ever, w ith the em ergence of cu ltural turn ”，peop le b egan to realize the translators ro le in translation, and thus the translators subjectiv ity b ecam e a hot top ic. M eanw hile, m ore and m ore translators and scho lars began to pay m ore attention to the translator and stud ied th is aspect from different ang les. A m ong them , relevance theory is a new one. B esides, d ifferent C h inese v ersion s of S ister C arrie in d ifferent periods are good m aterials to study the translators subjectiv ity.
