By coupling the signal processing capability of electronics with fundamental sensors, overall performance and accuracy has been improved while size, power dissipation, and cost have declined. The IEEE’s Instrument and Measurement Society and National Institute of Standards (NIST) are attempting to define a smart-sensor standard. The standard would establish communications protocol for interfacing to smart sensors: headers, data-word length and type, bit rate, redundancy checks, etc. Today there are at least 31 distinct smart sensor network protocols. Although a standard does not yet exist, a definition of “smart sensors” is beginning to emerge. Passage Two　 Smart Sensors “A smart sensor is one that can communicate, self diagnose, or make decisions (intelligence)”. Each of these features — communications, intelligence, self-diagnosis —can have a range of capabilities. “Communications” may imply anything from an analog output voltage to a simple, serial bit stream to a full handshaking verification process. More advanced communications exist in sensors which can receive configuration commands to alter their output range or data format. In effect, these sensors allow users to choose the degree of “smartness” desired for any given circumstance. For example, the user of a smart pressure sensor can select/change output format (analog, digital, or mixed), measurement units (atmospheres, bars, milibars, inches, inches, PSI, kgm/cm2, kilopascals, etc.), and integrat
