SID – Standard Instrument DepartureIn the interest of International harmony, the FAA has re-introduced the term “SID” while also utilizing the term “Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODP)” to describe certain procedures. Thus, two separate types of DPs are defined in AIM 5-2-6: SIDs and ODPs. Departure Procedure (DPs) Departure procedures (DPs) provide obstacle clearance protection to aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), while reducing communications and departure delays. DPs are published in text and/or charted graphic form. Regardless of the format, all DPs provide a way to depart the airport and transition to the en route structure safely.
