Abstract Since the 1 970s,the focus of foreign language research has shifted from teachers’teaching to students’learning and increasing numbers of studies have been undertaken to explore learners’individual differences.As one of the principal branches of learners’individual differences,learning style has attracted more and more attention from researchers.Learning style often refers to an individual’S habitual, persistent and preferred ways of absorbing,processing,and retaining new information and skills.So far,a large number ofresearches on learning style have been conducted abroad.In China,however,most of the studies are restricted to theoretical discussion. Not many empirical studies have been found,the focuses of which were mostly on university students.The domain of middle school students’learning styles has been relatively unexplored. The present study aims to find out the learning style preferences ofjunior middle school students.Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed,including a learning style questionnaire,an English achievement test,interviews and classroom observations.The subjects involved in this study consisted of 228 junior middle school students of Grade Three from four schools in the city of Ningbo.The data obtained from the questionnaire and the English test were analyzed with the help of SPSS 1 1.0,together with the interviews and classroom observations as complementary evidences。The major findings ofthe study are as follows: (1)Junior middle school students shared a variety of learning style preferences. Among the thirteen categories,independent learning style was most preferred while impulsive learning style was least preferred.On the whole,the students were more oriented to independent,reflective,serial,visual and haptic styles of learning. (2)Slight style differences existed between male and female students.Of all the style categories involved,male students preferred individual learning than their female counterparts.Female stu
