How to get the information you need. We’ll start now to discuss inspection technique. Your success as an inspector will be greater if the majority of your time is spent in the laboratory observing practices and asking questions. This “circuit” of read, ask and observe will be applied many times throughout inspection day. Read - Policies/procedures/documentation. Many good inspectors believe that this is best done right at the bench where things are happening. Others need a quiet space to concentrate. Observe - What the laboratory personnel are doing, and whether practices match the policies and procedures as written. Ask - Open ended probing questions to address groups of checklist items. Ask follow-up questions, and ask them of assorted individuals, not just the supervisors and managers. Ask “how and tell” questions. For example, “Please show me your procedure for attending to chemical spills, and tell me how that works.” If you don’t get the answer you’re expecting, or get no answer at all, rephrase the question.
