Chapter 6 Terms of Payment Learning Objectives General Introduction Instruments of Payment Methods of Payment Specimen Payment plays a very important role in business. Payment in international trade is much more complicated than that of domestic trade. The seller must sometimes wait several months for his money or the buyer may need to pay several months even before they see the goods. Clearly, both the seller and buyer run certain risks of non-payment or non-delivery. So the appointment of agents for trust purpose becomes necessary. This function is usually entrusted to banks, which have branches or correspondent banks in most overseas cities. (1) Draft(汇票) (2) Invoice(发票) (3) Check(支票) (4) Promissory Note(本票) (1) Draft(汇票) A draft is a written three-party instrument signed by a drawer(出票人)that directs a drawee(受票人/付款人) to pay a definite sum of money to or to the order of a specified party (payee)(受款人) at sight or at a specified future date unconditionally. It is sometimes called bill of exchange or bill.汇票是出票人签发的,委托付款人在见票时或者在将来某确定的时间无条件支付确定的金额给收款人或者持票人的书面三方票据。 (2) Invoice(发票) An invoice is a document that lists goods that have been supplied or services that have been done, and says how much money you owe for them. According to different uses, invoices can be divided into several types, such as commercial invoice(商业发票), shipping invoice(装运发票), trade invoice(贸易发票), sample invoice(样品发票). (3) Check(支票) A check is an unconditional order made by the drawer or maker, asking his bank to pay a certain amount of money to the payee or a specified party at sight.支票是指发票人签发的委托银行等金融机构于见票时支付一定金额给受款人或其他指定人的一种票据。 (4) Promissory Note(本票) A promissory note makes an unconditional promise in writing to pay a sum of money to the other party, either at sight or at a fixed future time. The party who promises to pay is called the maker; the party who is to be paid is the payee.出票人本人签发给受款人的、保证在见票时或在指定的将来某一时间无条件支付一定金额的书面承诺。 (1) Remittance(汇付) (2) Open Account(记账) (3) Collection
