They take it for granted that there must be one-to-one correspondence between Chinese and English. However, well-experienced translators are often baffled by the accuracy of word selection in translation as most of English words and some of Chinese characters are polysemous. There go some sayings about the meanings of words: “Words do not have meanings; people have meanings for words.” “Each word when used in a new context is a new word.” “Any meaning people give to a word is automatically its real meaning under those circumstances.” “Meaning depends on people’s attitude and depends on circumstances.” A word used in different context may share various meanings.
