A Segmentation Method of Printed Mongolian Character Recognition 　　Abstract. Considering the unique attributes of Mongolian character, segmentation has been a quite important part in Mongolian character recognition. This paper presents a segmentation method of dividing each Mongolian character into several elements and analyzes the difficulties of segmentation. Results of experimentation based on more than 6000 Mongolian Characters shows the segment accuracy of this method is over 98.6%. 　　Key words: Printed Mongolian character; Character recognition; Character segmentation 　　1. Introduction 　　Mongolian is the official language of China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region and the national language of Mongolia. The traditional script is widely used by people in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region of China. The Mongolians have made brilliant achievements in their literature. In order to keep Mongolian language alive and flourish, the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) of Mongolian script is necessary. 　　OCR, as an important branch of pattern recognition, has developed in a tremendous speed. Meanwhile, basing on the description and matching of Chinese character features, we have attained remarkable results in the fields of Chinese character recognition. However, the research on Mongolian character recognition has made slow progress compared with other languages. 　　The discussion begins with the components and characteristics of Mongolian character. Then the segmentation method and algorithm are amply illustrated. Then we discuss the difficulties of segmentation. Finally, the approach is tested experimentally with a brief discussion. 　　2.
