Abstract
Memorial Health System has the opportunity to become a benchmark facility in managing the productivity of its Emergency Department. The financial struggles hospitals face is reflected in the fiscal climate that includes managed care price pressures, tight labor markets, such as the current nursing shortage, and rising costs for drugs and supplies.( Given a hospitals limited ability to counteract external forces, opportunities for margin improvement are largely constrained to improving internal business operations.
This paper will identify the opportunity to improve productivity in the emergency department of Memorial Health System. Next-day productivity profiling is a way to begin to proactively manage resources.( Upon review of a six-month time frame the opportunity has been identified to flex staff and maintain the high quality, low cost care that affords any health system the opportunity to remain financially viable. Specific questions that will be addressed in this paper, include how this hospital will hold managers to department specific hours per unit targets for flexible staffing. Are the managers provided with timely, structured feedback on their performance against these targets? Daily reporting of performance against customized productivity standards facilitates accurate prediction of full time and flexible staffing needs, as well as efficient real-time utilization of staff to meet patient demand.
