Mineral Resources Authority Papua New Guinea EXPLORATION AND PROSPECTIVITY IN PNG PNG - a dynamic developing minerals industry Mineral Exploration in PNG Geological Mapping Geophysics Geochemistry Prospects for the discovery of new mineral Resources Functions of the Mineral Resources Authority My talk today will cover the five main aspects of the current dynamic development of PNG’s mineral industry – Exploration, geological mapping, geophysics and geochemistry and the potential for the discovery of new mineral resources. * Currently there are 9 operating metalliferous mines in PNG (Ok Tedi, Porgera , Ramu, Kaiantu, Tolukuma, Sinivit, Hidden Valley, Tolukuma amd Lihir). Most of these are exploited for their gold resource with the exception of Ok Tedi which also has major copper resources. There are Potential mines for Copper and gold are at Wafi-Golpu and with interest to reopen Panguna Mine on Bougainville Island. Potential areas to be mined are gold-silver resources at Serullea/Weioko and Imwana. Areas of advanced exploration attempting to be mines are at Frieda River and Nena (Copper- gold), Mount Kare (Gold) in which the current explorer operator is in liquidation, Yandera, Woodlark Island, Mount Pench, Metaworei (all gold), Wowo Gap (lateritic Nickel) Laloki (Cu-Au) and Kodu/Ofi (Cu), and offshore at the Solwarra 1 Copper-gold –zinc prospect (COMMENT HERE IF ML IS GRANTED) . A closed rehabilitated (Gold-silver) operation is on Mismia Island. There is active exploration mainly for porphyry and epithermal Copper- gold deposits with this part of the SW Pacific being rich in gold in these deposit styles. There is also exploration for a range of other metals in PNG including alluvial gold, Platinum Group elements associated with ultramafics of the Papuan Ophiolite Belt and elsewhere, heavy mineral beach deposits and offshore for volcanogenic massive sea floor sulphides particularly by Nautilus. * The real prospectivity of PNG is being recognised by
