Lesson 3_Pausing and Liaison
When a speech continuum (连续体) is
long, we divide it into units of meaning,
each at a time.
The smallest speech unit is called a
sense group.
Bob: Mr. Bean! // Can I get off
work / early today? // I have
birthday parties / to go. // I
need to buy a watch / for my
father / and a pair of
binoculars / for my
nephew. //
Boss: Im/possible!
Linking within a Group
Words in a sense group are linked together,
with no pauses between the words.
Long Short Pauses
Sense groups within a sentence are usually
characterized by a shorter pause. The end
of a sentence is always recognized by a
long pause.
Stress
At least one prominent word is contained in
a sense group.
