On19December2009,theeasternpartofTaiwanatapproximatedepthof45kmwasstruckbyastrongearthquake(Mw=6.4). Theepicenterwaslocatedabout20kmawayfromtheHualien(HLN)stationinTaiwan.ByanalyzingdatafromtheHLNstation andAmamiOshima(AMA)inJapanasaremotereference,thegeomagneticeast-west(D)andvertical(Z)componentsrecorded attheHLNstationareshowingnocorrelationwiththoseattheAMAstationinDecember2009.Anomalousvariationsof～10– 15nTstartedaboutoneweekbeforetheoccurrenceoftheearthquakeandlastedforabouttwoweeks.Also,anenhancedULF signalintherangeofPc3(10–40s)wasobservedafewdaysbeforetheonsetoftheearthquake.Moreover,thepolarization ratio(Z/H(north-southcomponent))ofthePc3amplitudeattheHLNstationdecreasedafewdaysprecedingtheearthquake. Themechanismbehindtheseanomalousvariationsisnotfullyunderstood.However,weexpectthatcrustalstressperturbations andundergroundconductivitychangesassociatedwiththeearthquakeplayedanimportantroleforgeneratingsuchobserved geomagneticva
