The antimalarial e?ect of the ethanolic stem bark extract of Ficus platyphylla Del was evaluated against Plasmodium berghei infectioninmice.Nontreated,experimentalcontrolmicediedoffulminantparasitemiafromday7to9post-infectionbutmice treatedwiththeextractat300mg/kgshowedmarkedlyreducedparasitaemiaboutsof43.50%andameansurvivaltimeof28days postinfection.TheplantextractpreventedadrasticreductioninPCVshowingitse?cacyinamelioratinganaemicconditionsin Plasmodiumberghei-infectedmice.Histologicalexaminationoflivertissuesoftreatedanduntreatedmicefurthersupportsthe antimalariapotentialofthisplant.Thisobservationvalidatesthetraditionaluseofthisplantforthetreatmentofmalaria. 1.Introduction PreviousreportshaveshownthatFicussycomorusLpos- sessesantimalariapotentialsagainstPlasmodiumfalciparum invitro[10].
