Weinvestigatedtheantibacterialactivityofsingle-walledcarbonnanotubes(SWCNTs)dispersedinsurfactantsolutionsofsodium cholate,sodiumdodecylbenzenesulfonate,andsodiumdodecylsulfate.Amongthethreesurfactants,sodiumcholatedemon- stratedtheweakestantibacterialactivityagainstSalmonellaenterica,Escherichiacoli,andEnterococcusfaeciumandtherebywas usedtodispersebundledSWCNTsinordertostudynanotubeantibioticactivity.SWCNTsexhibitedantibacterialcharacteristics forbothS.entericaandE.coli.Withtheincreaseofnanotubeconcentrationsfrom0.3mg/mLto1.5mg/mL,thegrowthcurves hadplateausatlowerabsorbancevalueswhereastheabsorbancevaluewasnotobviouslya?ectedbytheincubationrangingfrom 5minto2h.Our?ndingsindicatethatcarbonnanotubescouldbecomeane?ectivealternativetoantibioticsindealingwith drug-resistantandmultidrug-resistantbacterialstrainsbecauseofthephysicalmodeofbactericidalactionthatSWCNTsdisplay. 1.Introduction study, we investigated further the antimicrobial activity of thesameSWCNTsandtheirconjugateswithSDS,SDBS,and SC.
