AnantipodalVivaldiantennaoperatessimultaneouslyfortelemetryandsensingwhenplacedconformallyontoPVCpipes.Good radiatione?ciencyisrealisedandtheantennaimpedancematchingremainsstablewhenapipeisemptyorcontainswater.The ?delityfactorperformancebasedonaninputUltra-WidebandGaussianpulseisasuitable?gureofmerittodetectwaterpresence. Di?erentwaterlevelsandpipeconditionscorrespondto?delityfactorsbetween90%and96%,whichareasuitabledynamicrange forsensingandtheappropriatequalityforpulsecommunicationsforremotemonitoring. 1.Introduction wireless communication and sensor systems. With a large operating spectrum, short pulses can be generated. UWB sensors can then monitor pulse distortion and identify the associated environmental changes. Operating in the time domain implies the design of novel ?gures of merit to characterize UWB impulse radio systems. The signal purityinparticularcanbeusedtoassessthetimedomain performanceoftheUWBfront-endforantennaandsensor operativescenarios.Thiscanbemeasuredintermsof?delity factor,whichestimatesthedistortionofthereceivedsignal with respect to the original transmitted signal.
