Hotspotdetectionhasbeenwidelyadoptedinhealthsciencesfordiseasesurveillance,butrarelyinnaturalresourcedisciplines.In thispaper,twospatialscanstatistics(SaTScanandClusterSeer)andanonspatialclassi?cationandregressiontreesmethodwere evaluatedastechniquesforidentifyingchestnutoak(QuercusMontana)regenerationhotspotsamong50mixed-oakstandsinthe centralAppalachianregionoftheeasternUnitedStates.Hotspotsde?nedbythethreemethodshadamoderatelevelofconformity andrevealedsimilarchestnutoakregenerationsitea?nity.Chestnutoakregenerationhotspotswerepositivelyassociatedwiththe abundanceofchestnutoaktreesintheoverstoryandamoderatecoverofheatherspecies(VacciniumandGaylussaciaspp.)butwere negativelyassociatedwiththeabundanceofhayscentedfern(Dennstaedtiapunctilobula)andmountainlaurel(Kalmialatiforia).
