Background.Osteoporosisisachronicdiseasethatcansigni?cantlyimpactnumerousaspectsofhealthandwellness.Theindividual consequencesofosteoporosiscanbedevastating,oftenresultinginsubstantiallossofindependenceandsometimesdeath.One ofthefewillnesseswithgreaterdiseaseburdenthanlowbonemineraldensity(BMD)ismajordepressivedisorder(MDD).Both depressionandantidepressantusehavebeenidenti?edassecondarycausesofosteoporosis.Theobjectiveofthispaperistoreview andsummarizethecurrent?ndingsontherelationshipbetweenantidepressantuseandBMD.Methods.Relevantsourceswere identi?edfromthePubmedandMEDLINEdatabases,citingarticlesfromthe?rstrelevantpublicationtoSeptember1st,2010. Results.2001articlesinitiallymetthesearchcriteria,and35studieswerethoroughlyreviewedforevidenceofanassociation betweenSSRIuseandBMD,and8clinicalstudiesweredetailedandsummarizedinthispaper.Conclusions.Current?ndings suggestalinkbetweenmentalillnessandosteoporosisthatisofclinicalrelevance.Additionallongitudinalstudiesandfurther research on possible mechanisms surrounding the association between SSRI use on bone metabolism need to be conducted.
