This paper describes an index for judging the severity of transient events of power systems in simulation. The proposed transient stability index, known as the area-based COI-referred rotor angle index, isdeveloped byconsidering thefactthatalarge-sized power system isdivided into severalareasaccordingtothecoherencyofgeneratorsinaparticulararea.Itcanbeassumedthatan equivalent singlelargemachinecanrepresentallthegenerators inthatarea.Thus,theassessment ofrotoranglesforallgenerators canbesimpli?ed byonlyassessing theindexofareasinapower system.Thee?ectiveness oftheproposedindexinassessingthestabilityofpowersystemsandits ability inpinpointing theweakest areainthepower system isanalyzed. Furthermore, thispaper developed an emergency control scheme known as the combined UFLS and generator tripping inorder tostabilize the system when unstable faults occurred inapower system. The proposed indexisusedtoidentifythegeneratortobetrippedwhenthedevelopedemergencycontrolscheme operates. Theperformance ofthepr
