Background.Establishingthepatternofinfectionandantimicrobialsensitivitiesinthelocalenvironmentiscriticaltorationaluseof antibioticsandthedevelopmentofmanagementalgorithms.Methods.Morbidityhistoryandphysicalexaminationof140children with severe acute malnutrition were recorded. Their blood, stool, and urine samples were cultured and antibiotic sensitivity patternsdeterminedforanybacterialpathogensisolated.Results.Thirty-eightchildrenhadapathogenisolatedfrombloodculture, 60%ofwhichwereconsideredcontaminants.Coagulasenegativestaphylococcuswasthepredominantcontaminant,whilethe majorcausesofbacteraemiawerenontyphoidalSalmonella(13%),S.pneumoniae(10%),andE.coli(8%).E.coliaccountedfor 58%oftheurinary isolates.Nopathogenwasisolatedfromstool.Invitrosensitivitybydiskdi?usionshowedthat87.5%of theisolatesweresensitivetoampicillinand/orgentamicinand84.4%(27/32)topenicillinand/orgentamicin.
