VLSIDesign,2002Vol.15(1),pp.441–454 BasicAlgorithmsfortheAsynchronousRecon?gurableMesh YOSIBEN-ASHER*andESTISTEIN ComputerScienceDepartment,HaifaUniversity,Haifa31905,Israel (Received31January2001;Revised27June2001) Manyconstanttimealgorithmsforvariousproblemshavebeendevelopedfortherecon?gurablemesh (RM)inthepastdecade.Allthesealgorithmsaredesignedtoworkwithsynchronousexecution,withno regardforthefactthatlargesizeRMswillprobablybeasynchronous.Asimilarobservationaboutthe PRAM model motivated many researchers to develop algorithms and complexity measures for the asynchronousPRAM(APRAM).Inthiswork,weshowhowtode?netheasynchronousrecon?gurable mesh(ARM)andhowtomeasurethecomplexityofasynchronousalgorithmsexecutedonit.Weshow thatconnectingallprocessorsinarowofann￡nARM(theanalogofbarriersynchronizationinthe APRAMmodel)canbesolvedwithcomplexityQ(nlogn).Intuitively,thisisaverageworktimefor solvingsuchaproblem.Next,wedescribegeneralatechniqueforsimulatingT-stepsynchronousRM algorithmsontheARMwithcomplexityofQ(T·n2logn).Finally,weconsiderthesimulationofthe classical synchronous algorithm for counting the number of non-zero bits in an n bits vector using ek,nT￡nRM.Bycarefullyoptimizingthesynchronizationtothespeci?csynchronous algorithm beingsimulated,onecan(atleastinthecaseofcounting)improveuponthegeneralsimulation.
