Shu-Xue-Tong(SXT)isatraditionalChinesedrugwidelyusedtoamelioratestagnationofblood?ow,suchasbrainormyocardial infarction.WhetherSXTmayhavetherapeuticvalueforspinalcordinjury(SCI),duringwhichischemiaplaysanimportantrole initspathology,remainstobeelucidated.WehypothesizedthatSXTmaypromoteSCIhealingbyimprovingspinalcordblood ?ow(SCBF),andastudywasthusdesignedtoexplorethispossibility.Twenty-?vemaleSprague-Dawleyratswereused.SCIwas inducedbycompression,andSXTwasadministrated24hpostinjuryfor14successivedays.Thee?ectsofSXTwereassessed by means of laser-Doppler ?owmetry, motor functional analysis (open-?eld walking and footprint analysis), and histological analysis(hematoxylin-eosinandthioninstainingandNeuNimmunohistochemistry).SXTsigni?cantlypromotedSCBFofthe contusedspinalcordandenhancedtherecoveryofmotorfunction.Histologicalanalysisindicatedthatthelesionsizewasreduced, thepathologicalchangeswereameliorated,andmoreneuronswerepreserved.BasedontheseresultsweconcludethatSXTcan e?ectivelyimproveSCI. 1.
